A bypass switch is an essential component to use alongside a UPS system, particularly useful during maintenance or repair work. In the event of a major malfunction or the need for repair, it guarantees an uninterrupted flow of power while engineers attend to the UPS, keeping power continuity intact throughout. There are two main types. The static bypass acts as a backup for the inverter, instantly switching the load to the main power source if the inverter fails, and is a standard feature in nearly all on-line UPS systems. An external maintenance bypass switch, also called a wraparound bypass, sits outside the UPS and allows uninterrupted power during maintenance, letting the UPS be disconnected without powering down the entire network. Most UPS product descriptions confirm whether a static bypass is included. An external maintenance bypass usually needs to be bought separately and installed by a technician, and we typically recommend it for manufacturing or healthcare sites at the point of initial UPS purchase.
