Eriez Flotation, one of the foremost mining and minerals processing industry equipment providers in North America
and throughout the world, is taking a leadership role in environmental, social and corporate governance issues (ESG). The
company is continuing and advancing its efforts by working closely with customers to support their ESG initiatives through
ongoing equipment improvements and expert guidance to configure equipment flowsheets and operations to offer the greatest
sustainability possible with state-of-the-art technology, according to Eric Bain Wasmund, Ph.D., Vice President-Global Flotation
Business.
“Our company and our customers are taking diligent action to improve the mining business
in terms of energy and water intensity,” Wasmund says “Our StackCell® and HydroFloat®
solutions are two breakthrough technologies well-known for their ability to substantially
decrease environmental and safety costs and risks.” He adds, “Our technologies offer better
processing performance with a smaller footprint.”
The HydroFloat® Separator for coarse particle mineral concentration delivers the capacity of
a density separator with the selectivity of a flotation device. Using a novel aeration system
to disperse fine bubbles into a fluidized-bed environment, the HydroFloat Separator
significantly increases the selective recovery of coarse particles by applying flotation
fundamentals to gravity separation.
The high capacity StackCell was developed as an alternative to both conventional and
column flotation machines. This technology makes use of a pre-aerated, high-shear feed
canister that provides efficient bubble-particle contacting, thereby considerably shortening
the residence time required for industrial flotation. Other potential advantages of the
process include lower energy requirements, lower capital and installation costs, and
increased flexibility in plant retrofit applications.
According to Eriez, its findings indicate that its equipment can make an extensive impact on sustainability in the mining
business. “For example,” says Wasmund, the use of the HydroFloat can reduce the amount of fine tailings and water sent to
storage facilities by 30% or more. This is critical in parts of the world threatened by water shortages.”

Wasmund continues, “Our customers are extremely motivated and excited to find new, innovative and unique ways to
incorporate our flotation equipment to make step-change ESG improvements. Our technical staff works in cooperation with
clients to develop and perfect applications using these technologies.”
